The Bakırköy 13th Heavy Penal Court dismissed the trial of 39 enlisted soldiers and 157 officers in the case concerning the “Return to Life” operation carried out at Bayrampaşa Prison on December 19, 2000, on the grounds that the extraordinary statute of limitations period of 22 years and 6 months had expired. In its decision, the court cited the statute of limitations applied in the Ümraniye Prison case as a precedent. Güçlü Sevimli, one of the intervening lawyers, said that the statute of limitations was not applicable and that the court was responsible for the case being delayed for 10 years until it was brought to trial, adding that they would appeal the decision to the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court. Twelve people lost their lives and 29 were injured in the operation at Bayrampaşa Prison.
