Hacettepe University Rector Mehmet Cahit Güran requested expulsion penalties of up to four years for students who participated in the March 19 protests. The university administration launched investigations into over 100 students and sent them notices demanding written defenses within 10 days. Student collectives stated that students exercising their democratic rights were being targeted. Mert Ekinci, one of the students’ lawyers, said that non-violent actions should be considered within the scope of freedom of expression and that the suspension requests were disproportionate. The investigation process is ongoing.
