Journalist Fatih Altaylı was sentenced to four years and two months in prison in a case where he was tried on charges of threatening President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The Istanbul 26th Heavy Penal Court ruled that Altaylı should remain in custody. After completing his defense at the hearing held at the Silivri Open Prison Complex, Altaylı reacted to the verdict and left the courtroom. His lawyers stated that the decision violated freedom of expression. European Parliament Turkey Rapporteur Nacho Sanchez Amor and representatives from various political parties reacted to the decision. Altaylı was detained on June 20 due to his remarks in a YouTube broadcast that same day and was arrested on charges of “threatening the president.”
