According to Expression Interrupted’s quarterly report, 157 journalists were tried in 90 cases, 25 were arrested and 50 were detained in the first quarter of 2025. RTÜK fined opposition channels more than 25.3 million TL. Most lawsuits were filed on charges of “membership in a terrorist organization” and journalists covering protests were targeted. The Cyber Security Law was seen as a new threat to the press. Constitutional Court and ECtHR judgments reveal continued violations of press freedom in Turkey.
