The Journalists’ Union of Turkey (TGS) published the “Detention Guide” to ensure that journalists know their rights during detentions and are prepared for possible violations.
The guide recommends that journalists who are detained while covering the news should show their press cards, state their names out loud and inform the union.
It is emphasized that arrest and search warrants must be requested in the case of home detention, and that written warrants must be requested in the case of confiscation of belongings.
Basic rights such as the right to a lawyer, the right to remain silent, medical examinations, obtaining a battering report and meeting essential needs during detention are reminded.
It also details the actions to be taken against torture and ill-treatment.
“We have to know and defend our rights for journalists’ freedom of expression and security,” TGS said, calling on all colleagues to review the guide.
