Batman Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office prepared an indictment against former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş under TCK 301 for a speech he made in Batman in 2016. With this case, the number of lawsuits filed against Demirtaş under TCK 301 increased to 13. Demirtaş allegedly criticized the government and targeted security forces in his speech. The prosecutor’s office argued that the remarks could not be considered within the scope of freedom of thought and demanded imprisonment from 6 months to 2 years and a political ban. Demirtaş, on the other hand, stated that his speech was within the scope of legislative immunity and requested a decision on non-prosecution.
