The Constitutional Court (AYM) finalised the application of the family of T.Y., who lost one eye with a hand grenade thrown during the “Back to Life” Operation organized at Bayrampaşa Prison on December 19, 2000. The court issued that the right to life of T.Y. was violated and issued a retrial. The Administrative Court had previously issued, in 2006, 43,616 TL compensation to be paid to the family, whereas the State Council had reversed the decree. The Constitutional Court sent the decree to Istanbul 2nd Administrative Court for the consequences of the violence to be eliminated through retrial. 12 arrests and convicts have died in Bayrampaşa Prison Block C during the Back to Life Operation, where T.Y. was also imprisoned, and 50-77 prisoners have been injured.
