According to data by the Independent Communication Network (BIA), 251 journalists were prosecuted in the last three months of 2019 and 35 of them were sentenced to a total of 157 years and 4 months of imprisonment as well as 8,740 TL judicial fine. There were at least 61 journalists penalised in accordance with Turkish Criminal Code Article 299 during the Presidency of Erdoğan.
