The 4-year 5-month imprisonment sentence previously issued by the military court against Kıvanç Ağaoğlu, who was prosecuted as the murderer of private soldier Sevag Balıkçı in Batman, was increased in the retrial at the civil court. The murderer was sentenced to 16 years and eight months of imprisonment due to “homicide with eventual intent” and was arrested. Balıkçı was killed on the 96th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. People’s Democratic Party (HDP) MP Garo Paylan has stated, “At last we have seen a hate crime against Armenians being penalised by the court.”
