Başaran Aksu, organizing specialist for the Independent Mine Workers’ Union (Bağımsız Maden-İş), was released. Aksu had been detained on 13 August while trying to go to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources with workers from Doruk Madencilik and Eti Gümüş, both affiliated with Yıldızlar SSS Holding, over unpaid wages and compensation. Prosecutors extended Aksu’s detention under an accusation of “inciting the public to hatred and hostility.” Gökay Çakır, president of Bağımsız Maden-İş, and 82 workers who were detained in the same protest were released on the night of 14 August.
