The appeal court announced its first decision regarding the files of the academics, who signed the peace petition. The imprisonment sentence issued against Prof. Dr. Zübeyde Füsun Üstel, who was sentenced to 1 year and three months of imprisonment due to the petition, was finalized with the verdict of the 3rd Criminal Chamber of Istanbul Regional Court.
The Appeal Court decided that there is nothing that contradicts the law on the basis in the decree of the first-degree court; no deficiency in the evidence and procedure, the evaluation is appropriate in terms of proofs, that the actions were described correctly and that they were in accordance with the type of crime predicted in the law. Istanbul 32nd Assize Court had sentenced Üstel to 1 year and three months of imprisonment on April 4, 2018 and did not defer the announcement of the verdict due to the academic not exhibiting “remorse.”
