An investigation has been launched against journalist Öznur Değer on the grounds that she photographed police violence during a march for Rojava in Van on January 29 and shared the photos on her social media account. As part of the investigation conducted by the Van Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, Değer gave a statement at the Van Police Department Security Branch, accompanied by her lawyer. The prosecutor questioned Değer on charges of “inciting the public to hatred and hostility or insulting them.” In her statement, Değer said she took the photo as part of her journalistic activities and stated that pepper spray and plastic bullets were used against journalists and the crowd during the police intervention, and that many of her colleagues were injured. Değer said the investigation should be opened against the police officers who used violence, not against her.
