In Tarhan Village of Çorum, the village headman who took office after the local elections, made the call to prayer from the loudspeaker of the village cemevi, sparking the reaction of Alevi organizations. Alevi Bektashi Federation, Confederation of European Alevi Unions, Alevi Cultural Associations, Pir Sultan Abdal Cultural Association and Alevi Federation of Turkey made a joint statement and described the practice as an “attack on Alevi belief” and “assimilation attempt”. The statement emphasized that cemevis are places of worship for Alevis, and called for the immediate withdrawal of the decision.
