In Van, 6 women were sentenced to one year and three months each for protesting trustee appointments to municipalities in 2019. Former HDP Van Provincial Co-Chair Yadişen Karabulak, along with Ayşe Minaz, Hatice Deniz Aktaş, Şehzade Kurt, Seher Kadiroğlu and Leyla Balkan were put on trial. Van 7th Criminal Court of First Instance sentenced the women on the grounds of “violating Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations”. The women’s lawyers argued that the protest was within the scope of freedom of expression and demanded acquittal, but the court upheld the sentences.
