43 national and international freedom of expression, press freedom and human rights organizations condemned in a joint statement the arrest warrant issued by Turkish authorities against journalist Nedim Türfent.
It was stated that an arrest warrant was issued against Türfent on May 7, 2025 by the Hakkari Yüksekova Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office on charges of “making propaganda for a terrorist organization” and that the journalist was informed of the warrant on June 25. The warrant was issued while Türfent was in exile in Germany, citing his social media posts.
The statement recalled Türfent’s long imprisonment and rights violations in the past due to his news reports and emphasized that the arrest warrant is a clear attack on freedom of expression. It drew attention to the risk of Türfent’s extradition and demanded the immediate withdrawal of the warrant.
The statement was signed by many reputable organizations such as Index on Censorship, PEN International, DFG, TGS, IFJ, IPI, ARTICLE 19 and CPJ.
