The Democratic Congress of Peoples, the Free Women’s Movement, and the DEM Party held a press conference on February 15, 2026, at Istanbul’s Fatih Aksaray Square to mark the anniversary of Abdullah Öcalan’s capture. Following the statement, police intervened against the dispersing crowd and detained 16 people in handcuffs on charges of “organization propaganda.” The 16 individuals, whose statements were taken at the police station, were later released. Arife Çınar, Co-Chair of the DEM Party Istanbul Provincial Branch, criticized the conditions of isolation; Gizem Kuzuk, a member of the DEM Party Istanbul Provincial Executive Board, commented on the events of February 15.
