Retired pilot, journalist and human rights defender Bahadır Altan was released under judicial control after being detained in İzmir over a social media post opposing the appointment of a trustee to Halk TV. Altan, a former executive of the İzmir Branch of the Human Rights Association, posted on X on 15 October emphasizing the importance of press freedom and calling on the opposition for a united struggle. Police summoned Altan to the Konak District Police Department to give a statement and detained him after the statement on a charge of “inciting the public to hatred and hostility or degrading the public.” After spending the night in custody, Altan was released on 16 October with a travel ban and an obligation to report once a week.
