Investigation against 72 police officers not permitted within Kurkut murder case

Diyarbakır Governorate did not permit investigations to be opened against 72 police officers on duty at the crime scene during the murder of Kemal Kurkut, who was shot dead by the police during the Newroz celebration in 2017.

Preparing an indictment against defendant police officer Y.Ş., who shot Kurkut, with a claim of life imprisonment due to ‘homicide with eventual intent’, Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office had started a separate investigation against 72 police officers on duty at the Newroz celebration area on the day of the crime due to ‘neglect of duty’ and ‘spoliation of evidence.’ Denying the Prosecutor demand, the governorate claimed that there was no neglect by the police officers except the defendant. However, the case file states that the other police officers who were on duty during the Kurkut murder have examined cameras of the journalists who were present in the area and deleted visuals taken by them.
