A case has been filed against filmmaker Rojhilat Aksoy under Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code in connection with the screening of the animated film “The Birth of Aurora,” which deals with the Armenian Genocide, in Diyarbakır. The Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office prepared an indictment alleging that certain statements in the film “publicly insulted the Turkish nation and state institutions.” In the case filed following the film’s screening on December 17, 2024, at the Sezai Karakoç Cultural Center, Aksoy denied the charges, arguing that the narrative falls under the scope of freedom of expression. The second hearing of the case will take place on April 6 at the Diyarbakır 22nd Criminal Court of First Instance.
