Former national volleyball player Derya Çayırgan was detained on January 15 as part of a corruption investigation conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. Following her statement to the prosecutor’s office, the prosecutor’s office referred Çayırgan to the criminal court of first instance with a request for house arrest and a ban on leaving the country. In her statement, Çayırgan said she had limited contact with Ekrem İmamoğlu in the past and that there was no irregularity or financial interest involved. The court is expected to rule on the request.
