Youth organizations in Istanbul protested the attacks on the Kurdish-populated neighborhoods of Sheikh Maksud and Eşrefiye in Aleppo on January 9 at Istanbul University’s Beyazıt Campus. During a press statement in front of the Esnaf Cafeteria, the police cordoned off the protest after a group engaged in provocative behavior. Citing the students’ reaction as justification, police intervened and, according to journalist Zeynep Kuray, detained approximately 40 students on the grounds of a missing radio. After the intervention, a group gathered around the campus chanting fascist slogans, but police did not intervene.
