CHP Istanbul Provincial Directorate under police blockade, 1 person detained

CHP Istanbul Provincial Chairmanship building was blockaded by the police, riot police were deployed and CHP Youth Member Emrecan Polat was detained.

On September 2, provincial chair Özgür Çelik and his administration were suspended by the 45th Civil Court of First Instance and replaced by an interim board including Gürsel Tekin. Çelik and some MPs had started a vigil at the provincial building against this.

Today, police blocked the roads leading to the building. While the CHP leadership called all organizations and members to the building, the governor’s office banned all demonstrations and events in Beşiktaş, Beyoğlu, Eyüpsultan, Kağıthane, Sarıyer and Şişli between September 7-10.

CHP supporters did not recognize the ban; thousands of people marched to the provincial building. At some points, citizens overcame barricades to reach the building. CHP women also started a sit-in protest in front of the building with the slogan “The trustees will go, we will stay”.
