Cartoonist Zehra Ömeroğlu, who was charged with “obscenity” due to a cartoon published in Leman magazine, was acquitted after 5 years of legal struggle. In the 13th hearing held today, the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance ruled that the cartoon should be considered within the scope of freedom of expression. Against the prosecution’s request for punishment, Ömeroğlu’s lawyers defended the artistic quality of the work and freedom of expression. RSF and FreeMuse representatives also attended the hearing.
