TIHV and IHD made a joint statement at Saraçhane Park in Istanbul on June 26th, the Day of Solidarity with Victims of Torture. In the statement read by the TIHV Istanbul Representative Mümtaz Murat Kök, it was emphasized that torture has become widespread with increasing authoritarianism and the practice of impunity continues. Attention was drawn to the prolongation of detention periods, prevention of access to lawyers, isolation practices in prisons and enforced disappearances. It was reminded that Turkey has still not ratified the UN Convention against Enforced Disappearances and called on the state to end impunity. The statement ended with the slogan “Human dignity will defeat torture”.
