Amnesty International has launched a new urgent action to mark the 30th anniversary of the peaceful protests of the Saturday Mothers/People in Galatasaray Square. The organization called on the Turkish authorities to lift unlawful restrictions on the square and recognize the right to assembly.
“The Saturday Mothers’ protest is a symbol of the perseverance and determination of human rights defenders in Turkey despite repression, ill-treatment and prosecution,” said Amnesty Turkey Campaigner Milena Buyum.
The organization said it joins calls from around the world to stand in solidarity with the Saturday Mothers/People. The protests began on May 27, 1995, demanding an explanation of the fate of those forcibly disappeared in custody in the 1990s.
