This year, the Press Council awarded the May 3 Press Freedom Award to all real journalists who have been detained, sentenced to house arrest, imprisoned, or left unemployed, but who continue to work as journalists. Press Council President Pınar Türenç emphasized the importance of law and democracy, saying, “It is unacceptable to interfere with journalists in order to inform the public correctly and to ensure the public’s freedom of information.” The ceremony, held at the Pera Museum in Beyoğlu, was attended by journalists and lawyers as well as political figures. Türenç reminded that Turkey has fallen from 99th to 158th in the press freedom rankings and drew attention to the pressure on journalists.
