The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office completed its investigation into comedian Deniz Göktaş over statements in his show “Ölü Deniz.” Prosecutors sought a total prison sentence of between 2 years and 8 months and 11 years and 2 months on charges of “publicly inciting the public to hatred and hostility or degrading a section of the public,” “publicly insulting the President” and “praising crime and criminals.” President Tayyip Erdoğan was listed as the complainant in the indictment. Prosecutors sent the indictment to the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance for review. Göktaş was detained after returning to Türkiye on 2 July and arrested on 3 July. The court ordered his release on two charges on 28 August, but before he left prison he was arrested again on the charge of “praising crime and criminals.”
