TIHV launches “Silencing Criticism” report

The Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TIHV) reported the violations of freedom of expression and media freedom in the 5-year period between 2015-2019 with the title of “Silencing Criticism”. According to the report, there were 2,779 violations of freedom of expression in 5 years. As a result of these violations, 6 thousand 479 people were detained, 2 thousand 801 people were arrested. In 1372 lawsuits, 727 people were sentenced to 27,448 months in prison. “Making illegal organisation propaganda” and “insulting the President” constituted a very important part of the accusations presented as grounds for violations of freedom of expression. During this period, a total of 1,118 media workers were detained as a result of at least 287 police raids and 146 police interventions; 281 media workers were arrested and 311 media workers were sentenced to a total of 1,592 years and 7 months in prison on various grounds. On the other hand, at least 4,684 social media users were detained. At least 2,357 people were arrested for their social media posts. Please click here for the full report.
