Journalist Mehmet Üçar was released in the first hearing of his trial due to “illegal organization membership”. Üçar, who was arrested on November 29, 2024 for reporting for Yeni Özgür Politika and PolitikArt, which are published in Europe, made his defense via SEGBİS at Batman 2nd Assize Court.
Üçar stated that he was a journalist and that his interviews were for news purposes and that the money he received from abroad was royalty payments. His lawyers demanded his acquittal, while the prosecutor’s office asked for his continued detention. The court ruled for his release with a travel ban. The trial was postponed to November 7th.
