The first hearing of the case against 168 people for participating in the November 25, 2024, protest in Taksim marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women was held at the Istanbul 29th Criminal Court of First Instance. The prosecution sought prison sentences for 161 people on charges of “participating in an unlawful assembly and march” and for 7 people additionally on charges of “resisting to prevent the performance of duty.” Only 30 defendants were heard in the hearing; the defendants and their lawyers stated that the ban on the protest had been overturned by the administrative court and that police violence had occurred. The court postponed the trial until April 8.
