The 3rd Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court overturned the 10-year prison sentence imposed on Nuriye Gülmen, who staged a protest on Yüksel Street in Ankara demanding her “reinstatement” after being dismissed by a decree, on the grounds of “DHKP/C membership” on December 30. The Chamber stated that the conviction was based on witness statements that were not heard during the trial and that the right to defense had been violated. The verdict against Yasemin Karadağ, who was tried in the same case, was also overturned on the same grounds. Despite the overturning of the verdict, the Supreme Court ruled that Gülmen and Karadağ should remain in custody. The case was sent to the Istanbul 28th Heavy Penal Court for retrial.
