Sözcü TV, which was sentenced to a 10-day broadcast suspension by RTÜK on March 27, will go black as of midnight on July 8, unless a last-minute stay of execution is issued. The penalty is based on the allegation of “inciting the public to hatred and hostility” during live broadcasts following the detention of Ekrem İmamoğlu.
Sözcü TV applied to the court for a stay of execution. Editor-in-chief Özgür Çakmakçı and journalist İpek Özbey emphasized that the penalty is against freedom of the press. During the suspension, journalists will continue their work and Sözcü will publish exclusive content.
Halk TV was given a similar penalty, but Ankara 21st Administrative Court issued a stay of execution. RTÜK can appeal this decision within 7 days.
