Social relations cited in journalist Öznur Değer’s sentence

Mardin 2nd High Criminal Court issued its reasoned decision concerning JINNEWS News Director Öznur Değer, whom it sentenced to one year and six months in prison for reporting on allegations of torture in Nusaybin. The court ruled that Kızıltepe Acting District Gendarmerie Commander Kamil Aksoy had been targeted in the report published on 16 July 2024. The reasoned decision argued that the report did not fall within the press’s functions of informing, criticizing and commenting. Despite evidence that Aksoy’s identity information and photograph had previously appeared in Sabah newspaper and other media outlets, the court claimed that the information was not obtainable by everyone. It also rejected the accuracy of the report, which contained eyewitness statements and interviews concerning the torture allegations. The court did not reduce Değer’s sentence, citing her social relations and her lack of remorse over the report.
