After the arrest of rapper Ezhel due to ‘encouraging drug use,’ the hashtag #FreeEzhel became the top trend in Turkey on Twitter.
28-year-old Ezhel had launched his Turkish rap album, ‘Müpthezel’ on Spotify last year. Taken into custody and released afterwards with judicial control a few months ago, Ezhel was arrested at the courthouse he went to testify. The Turkish Penal Code predicts the sentence against the offense of encouraging drug use as imprisonment from 5 up to 10 years.
Following Ezhel’s arrest, many artists, songwriters and journalists have tweeted for Ezhel’s release, including Moğollar, Serken Altuniğne, Yasemin Mori, Harun Tekin, Murat Meriç, Ceza, Derya Bengi, Amberin Zaman and Işıl Cinmen.
