The prosecutor sought a sentence in the trial of former CHP Istanbul Provincial Chair Canan Kaftancıoğlu on a charge of “insulting the President.” The case was opened after Kaftancıoğlu shared a 30 April 2025 post by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan about corruption with the words, “It is also our duty… The days when those who lay hands on the public purse will be tried are near.” Kaftancıoğlu rejected the charge and said she agreed with Erdoğan’s statement. The court gave defense lawyers time to respond to the prosecutor’s opinion and adjourned the hearing until 10 December.
