Sakarya 3rd Criminal Court of First Instance sentenced conscientious objector Ersan Uğur Gör to prison for being a “draft evader” during various periods in 2024 and 2025. Citing Gör’s previous convictions, the court did not suspend the sentences, convert them into alternative sanctions or defer announcement of the verdict. It applied repeat-offender provisions and imposed a supervised-release measure. The ruling could be appealed within two weeks. Gör, who declared his conscientious objection in 2004, had previously faced prosecutions and penalties because of his opposition to compulsory military service. Conscientious Objection Watch criticized the ruling and called for recognition of the right to conscientious objection and an end to the punishment of conscientious objectors.
