The Grand National Assembly of Türkiye rejected, with the votes of AKP and MHP lawmakers, a parliamentary inquiry motion submitted by the YENİ Party to investigate violations of freedom of expression and press freedom in Türkiye. YENİ Party Deputy Chair Utku Çakırözer said journalists faced investigations, detention and arrest over their reporting and social media posts. Çakırözer said at least 50 journalists had been detained in the first seven months of 2026 and that journalists had appeared before judges about 350 times.
