Police violence files under impunity

Istanbul 7th Criminal Court of First Instance issued the acquittal of two police officers, who were on trial in the lawsuit filed following the complaint of Gökçe Algan due to “willful injury” and “misuse of duty.” Algan’s collar bone was broken following the targeted water spraying of an anti-riot water cannon vehicle during the Gezi Park protests. The reasoned decision claimed that “the protests were extended in a way that would constitute an environment of chaos without control and were turned into an anti-government demonstration;” hence the police officers have acted in accordance with the order that was given to them.

The police officer beating 75-year-old Perihan Pulat during the protest held on May 1, 2018 on Yüksel Street in Ankara with the demand, “We want our jobs back”, was sentenced to an almost “rewarding” penalty. Ankara 14th Criminal Court of First Instance sentenced police officer E.G. to 3 thousand TL judicial fine with 15 months of installment plan, deferring the announcement of the verdict.
