Citizens gathered at Konak Cumhuriyet Square following a call by the Yeni Parti İzmir Provincial Organization to protest İzmir Metropolitan Mayor Cemil Tugay’s political stance and the government’s policies. Provincial Chair Çağatay Güç argued in a press statement that voters’ will was being interfered with and said the office of mayor belonged to the public, not individuals. Police blocked citizens who began marching after the statement. Protesters who crossed the barricade continued through side streets in Konak. They chanted slogans including “İzmir, defend your will” and “Traitor Cemil.” The protesters regrouped outside the Yeni Parti İzmir Provincial Organization and ended the protest.
