Mehmet Türkmen, President of BİRTEK-SEN, was detained on the grounds of a speech he delivered at a protest by Sırma Halı workers in Gaziantep. The prosecutor’s office initiated proceedings against Türkmen on charges of “inciting the public to hatred and hostility.” The Gendarmerie searched Türkmen’s home and seized his electronic devices. While Türkmen’s interrogation is ongoing, Sırma Halı workers are continuing their protest in Başpınar against late wage payments and poor working conditions.
