The Court of Cassation upheld the aggravated life sentence given to Kazım Altınmakas for the murder of Fatma Altınmakas. However, the file on the rape accusation was closed with non-prosecution. According to Jinnews, Fatma Altınmakas was murdered one day after she was raped by Sinan Altınmakas, the brother of the man she was married to. Fatma, who did not speak Turkish, was deposed without an interpreter and her complaint was not recorded in official records. The rape investigation was closed due to lack of evidence. Lawyer Ruken Güven stated that other perpetrators except the convicted murderer remain unpunished and said, “This decision legitimizes impunity.”
