Peace academic Aslı Aydemir, who reacted to the provocative attack on LeMan magazine by an Islamist group, was arrested on charges of “intentional injury with a weapon” after her house was raided in the morning. Aydemir had told the group “You are in the wrong place, go to Palestine” during the attack. Detained Aydemir was arrested by Istanbul 5th Criminal Judgeship of Peace.
Contemporary Lawyers Association Istanbul Branch made a statement saying, “While jihadists roam freely, those who were attacked are arrested for crimes they did not commit.” The Association of Psychologists for Social Solidarity, of which Aydemir is a member, and Peace Academics also condemned the arrest.
The attack on LeMan magazine followed an investigation launched over a cartoon. While the police did not detain the attackers, LeMan staff and executives were detained and arrested in house raids. Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office also launched a financial investigation into the magazine.
