Welat Agency reporter Nedim Oruç was beaten and detained by police while covering news in Cizre district of Şırnak on January 15. After undergoing medical checks, Oruç was first taken to the TEM Branch in Cizre, then transferred to the Şırnak Provincial Police Department without any charges being filed. The Dicle Fırat Journalists Association stated that the detention constituted an obstruction of journalistic activities and demanded Oruç’s immediate release.
