Journalist İsmail Arı was charged with “disturbing the peace and tranquility of persons” following a complaint by former RTÜK Chair Ebubekir Şahin. After reporting that Şahin’s relatives had been appointed as managers at the institution while Şahin was RTÜK chair, Arı contacted Şahin and asked whether he wanted to respond to the allegations. Prosecutors listed Arı’s phone call and his message “Would you like to exercise your right of reply?” among the evidence in the indictment. Arı rejected the accusation, saying he had acted to provide the right of reply, one of the basic rules of journalism.
