Republican People’s Party (CHP) 26th Session Istanbul MP Barış Yarkadaş announced data on January in the monthly-released Media Report. “Journalists are forced against reporting news, speaking up and writing. Journalism is considered a crime by the political power,” Yarkadaş said.
According to the data shared by Yarkadaş, two journalists were arrested, two journalists were detained and 36 journalists stood trial in the one-months period. Five journalists received imprisonment sentences for 22 years and three journalists were sentenced to judicial fines of 22,660 TL. Lawsuits were filed against three journalists. Two journalists were beaten and one was threatened. A lawsuit was filed against one director; an investigation was started against one news and one documentary was banned to access.
