An investigation was opened against the parents of 16-year-old Berkin Elvan, who died after being shot by the police with a tear gas shell during the Gezi Park protests, due to “insulting the President.” The investigation started against the parents were based on the expressions used by mother Gülsüm Elvan and father Sami Elvan during the press statement organised in front of the courthouse after the hearing on their child’s death, which was held on December 9, 2020. In their statement at the time, the parents had referred to the announcement of President Erdoğan regarding the Gezi Park protests, who said, “They are asking who gave the order to the police? I did!”
