In addition to the criminal investigation launched due to the cartoon published in Leman Magazine, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched a financial investigation against the magazine’s executives. The investigation will investigate whether the magazine received any financial support from abroad.
Published on June 26, 2025, the cartoon, which allegedly depicted the Prophet Muhammad, caused a public outcry and the prosecutor’s office launched an ex officio investigation. A detention warrant was issued for six people, including the cartoon’s illustrator. Four of them have been detained, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend two suspects.
While the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office emphasized that the process regarding the content that caused public outrage is being carried out “meticulously”, it was announced today that an investigation into the financial resources of the magazine has been initiated.
