8th Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation approved the verdict of acquittal issued by the local court for the letter, including the expressions, “Freedom for Mr. Abdullah Öcalan, who resists and does not surrender.”
Convicts at Tekirdağ Type-F Prison, Muhammet Akyol, Vedat Düşküner and Baysal Demirhan sent a letter to the same court their friend, Cemal Bozkurt, was on trial at. The letter, stating, “We commit the same crime as Bozkurt,” supported the actions leading to the charge of “making terrorist organization propaganda” imposed against Bozkurt at Istanbul 16th Assize Court.
A verdict of acquittal was issued for three people at the end of the prosecutions, which started in 2012 following the denouncement of Istanbul 16th Assize Court. The file was then sent to the Court of Cassation following the objection of the Prosecutor’s Office. With the approval of the Court of Cassation, the verdict issued by the local court for freedom of expression was finalised.
