The Istanbul 9th Administrative Court rejected the request to overturn the decision to suspend Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer from office and appoint an interim administrator in his place. The court ruled that there was no legal violation in the procedure regarding the appointment of Istanbul Deputy Governor Can Aksoy as interim administrator of the Esenyurt Municipality. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office detained Özer on October 30, 2024, as part of an investigation into “urban reconciliation,” and the court ordered his detention. The Ministry of the Interior subsequently removed Özer from office and appointed Can Aksoy as the interim administrator. The court also noted in its ruling that the Istanbul 14th High Criminal Court had sentenced Özer to 6 years and 3 months in prison on January 23, 2026, on charges of “membership in an organization.”
