During the May 1 demonstrations in Istanbul, police intervened against numerous groups in the areas around Taksim, Beşiktaş, Şişli, and Mecidiyeköy. Police attacked those attempting to march to Taksim with pepper spray and detained a large number of people. The Istanbul Governor’s Office announced that 575 people had been detained as of 6:00 p.m. Among those detained were Nebiye Merttürk, President of Halkevleri; Başaran Aksu, Organizing Specialist at Umut-Sen; Doğan Ergün, Deputy Chairman of the Turkish Workers’ Party (TİP); and various union and party officials.
